The Safe Communities grant continues to address unintentional injuries that are related to traffic crashes.  Seat belt usage in Greene County continues to improve.  In 2010, 77% of drivers in Greene County have been observed wearing their seat belts; an increase from 64% in 2009.  Passengers continue to improve in their seat belt usage as well from 79% in 2009 to 80% in 2010.  Seat belt usage saves lives and the Safe Communities Coalition continues to help the law enforcement agencies pass on this important message.

The Health Department is partnering with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department in promoting the STOPPED (Sheriffs Telling Our Parents and Promoting Educated Drivers) program in Greene County.  This is a voluntary parental notification system adopted by the Greene county Sheriff’s Office to help reduce the number of young drivers involved in motor vehicles accidents.  Crashes are the leading killer among young people under age 25.  Parents can register at the Sheriff’s Department or call the Health Department for an application.

Safe Communities partners with the local Ohio State Patrol post and all local law enforcement agencies, and the Coalition is always seeking new resources and contacts to be part of not only the Coalition, but also for various projects taken on by the Coalition.  Safe Communities can be found at many local festivals, as well as the Greene County Fair promoting traffic safety including but not limited to motorcycle safety, restraint use, distracted/impaired/aggressive driving, rural driving and senior adult driving skills.

Greene County Safe Communities Coalition continues to be an active force in the county and strives to uphold the commitment of keeping Greene county residents safe while on the road.  Meetings are held bimonthly in January, March, May, July, September and November.
