Greene County Safe Communities Urges Motorists to Prepare for Winter Driving

(Xenia, OH)   The Greene County Safe Communities would like to remind motorists that now is the time to prepare for winter driving.  Take a few moments to review the following check list and get ready for the winter.

·        Get your car serviced now.  This would include a tune up, fill the oil, check for leaks, and any additional routine maintenance.

·        Check your battery and the charging system that helps it function.

·        Check your cooling system.  Add antifreeze and flush the system if necessary.

·        Fill the washer reserve(s) that supply washing fluid to your windows.

·        Check your windshield wipers and defrosters.

·        Inspect your tires and your brakes.

·        Learn how to handle your specific car in bad weather.  Practice in a safe, off-road area to get familiar with how your car reacts to ice and snow.  Locate your defroster button, wiper switch, and heater switch before you need them.

·        Plan your travel time and your route allowing extra time to travel on a planned route.  Listen to the radio and/or the television for current updates on the roadways and traffic alerts.  Stay at home if necessary.

·        Stock your vehicle with emergency supplies.  Brushes and scrapers to clean off your car and windshield, jumper cables, flashlights, blankets, food, and a cell phone.

·        Learn what to do in a winter emergency.  Stay with your car.  Put bright markers on the antenna or windows.  Do not run your car for long periods with the windows up.

Drive safely and carefully and always remember to buckle up.  Greene County can have a safe winter season if everyone is ready for the snow, ice, and rain of winter.
