Greene County Medical Reserve Corps
Fourteenth in the Nation in Number of Registered Volunteers for Hurricane
Katrina Relief Effort
(XENIA,
OH) The Greene County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a volunteer organization
that is coordinated by the Greene County Combined Health District (GCCHD). The
role of the MRC is to provide support to the community during emergencies.
The
Greene County MRC volunteers include medical professionals and non-medical
persons. These volunteers have been actively assisting the American Red Cross
(ARC) during the Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort. MRC volunteers have donated
numerous hours staffing the welcoming centers and shelters, and assisting with
administering immunizations and assisting the numerous medical primary care
teams.
The
Greene County MRC Unit is 14th among the nation in total volunteers registered
for the Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort. Nationally there are 578 MRC members
who have applied to help with 262 being prepared for deployment.
The
American Red Cross is currently working to get the MRC volunteers into the
affected areas. Volunteers have been briefed to expect “field conditions”
which could possibility include: no showers; no air conditioning; housing in
tents; sleeping accommodations on a bed roll; military ready-to-eat meals; and
12 hours work shifts with long periods of standing.
MRC
volunteers have agreed to take on the Katrina Relief Effort knowing of the
austere conditions. These volunteers know that their efforts will help improve
the lives of those they are serving.
Additional
opportunities to serve in this auxiliary role to the U.S Public Health Service
will be coming in the near future.
