GREENE
COUNTY COMBINED HEALTH DISTRICT
REPORTS FINDINGS ON SURVEY REGARDING
KIDS EATING HABITS
(XENIA, OH) Greene County Combined Health District surveyed 154 children ages
5-12 who attended the 2004 Summer Caravan Program. The survey measured such
things as: number of hours of TV watched; fast food intake; and fruit and
vegetable consumption. The survey was conducted as part of the Health District’s
Healthier Me Program, a fitness and nutritional promotion program.
Survey
statistics reported that children who do not eat five or more fruits and
vegetables daily are more that 100 times at risk of being obese. Joyce Rickels,
Healthier Me Program coordinator and Dietitian states, “the Healthier
Me Program was designed to help improve fitness and nutrition goals.
Improving the consumption of fruits and vegetables is extremely important in
reducing obesity in children ages 5-12.”
The
Healthier Me Program continues to work with various groups throughout Greene
County. Program staff includes: Joyce Rickels, Dietitian; Ruth Hill, Social
Worker; and Kathy Pascoe, R.N.
