Greene County Combined Health District
Announces January as National Radon Action Month

(Xenia, OH) The Greene County Combined Health District (GCCHD) announces January as National Radon Action Month.

Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive, cancer-causing gas that is produced by the decay of radium in the soil.  It can enter homes through cracks in the foundation, through unsealed sumps, construction joints and openings around drains and pipes.  It is the second leading cause of lung cancer, and in Greene County approximately half the homes have levels of radon at or above the “action level” set by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency.  It is recommended that a licensed mitigation specialist correct homes with levels of radon at or above 4 picocuries per litre of air.

Both Greene and Montgomery County residents may receive a free radon test kit during business hours at the following locations: Greene County Combined Health District, 360 Wilson Drive, Xenia; Fairborn Government Center, 44 West Hebble Avenue, Fairborn; Yellow Springs Village Offices, 100 Dayton Street, Yellow Springs; Jamestown Village Offices, Seaman Drive, Jamestown; Bellbrook Administrative Office, 15 East Franklin Street, Bellbrook; and Regional Air Pollution Control Agency, 117 South Main Street, Dayton.

For additional information or questions about radon, contact Greene County Combined Health District, Margaret Burns, Radon Education Coordinator at (937) 374-5648, or 1-866-858-3588.
