GREENE COUNTY COMBINED HEALTH DISTRICT TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE ON TOBACCO SALES COMPLIANCE CHECKS

Mark A. McDonnell, Health Commissioner, Greene County Combined Health District, announced that the  Health District will hold a Press Conference on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 , to share the results of the most recent Greene County tobacco sales compliance checks. The Press Conference will be at 3:30 p.m. on the steps of the county Courthouse in Xenia .

The Health District, in conjunction with the Tobacco-Free Greene County Coalition conducted tobacco sales compliance checks on Saturday, November 2, 2002 .  Fourteen  youth volunteers and eight adult volunteer drivers visited ninety-six tobacco vendor sites.

With the passing of Ohio Senate Bill 218, it is illegal for youth under the age of 18 to possess, use or purchase tobacco products. It is also illegal for anyone to sell tobacco products to youth under the age of 18 (Ohio Revised Code section 2927.02). As a local leader in tobacco education and prevention, the Health District regularly conducts tobacco sales compliance checks throughout the county to monitor the illegal sale of tobacco products to youth.

Tobacco kills nearly 20,000 Ohioans each year. In addition, an estimated 314,000 Ohio children under the age of 18 will die from tobacco use. Tobacco use in Ohio leads to excessive health care and taxpayer costs and diminishes the quality of life for millions of Ohioans addicted to tobacco products.
