Purpose: |
| |
This
comprehensive health education/risk reduction program
offers HIV/AIDS services to Greene, Clinton, Fayette and
Warren County residents with a total of 11 testing
sites. The cornerstone of the program is to
educate residents on how to prevent the spread of the
AIDS virus and to encourage routine testing of high risk
individuals by health care providers. This is
accomplished through group education, individual
counseling and testing, prevention case management, and
community awareness. |

Description: |
| |
The
Confidential Counseling and Testing program provides a
way for persons at risk for HIV infection to learn their
HIV status and to learn how to reduce their risk of HIV
infection. No names are used when scheduling
appointments. Clients are given a number to identify
themselves and their test results. At the time of
testing the client chooses either confidential or
anonymous testing. The program also provides up-to-date
factual information on HIV/AIDS in order to promote
responsible decision-making and HIV infection risk
reduction. |

HIV
stands for |
| |
Human
Immunodeficiency Virus. This is the virus that causes AIDS.
HIV is different from most other viruses because it
attacks the immune system. The immune system gives our
bodies the ability to fight infections. HIV finds and
destroys a type of white blood cell (T cells or CD4
cells) that the immune system must have to fight the
disease. |

Testing |
| |
Once HIV
enters the body, the immune system starts to produce
antibodies - (chemicals that are part of the immune
system that recognize invaders like bacteria and viruses
and mobilize the body's attempt to fight infection). In
the case of HIV, These antibodies cannot fight off the
infection, but their presence is used to tell whether a
person has HIV in his or her body. In other words most
HIV tests look for the HIV antibodies rather than
looking for HIV itself. |

Education Services |
| |
Educational
presentations on HIV/AIDS and its prevention can be
provided for interested community groups with at least 3
weeks advance notice. Educational materials (literature
and videotapes for loan) are available upon request.
Information and referral can be provided over the phone.
The anonymous Counseling/Testing program allows for
determining clients’ risk for HIV, testing for
antibodies, consultation on results and risk reduction,
and appropriate referrals as needed. |
