(Xenia, OH) The Greene County Combined Health District and the Regional Air Pollution Control Agency of Dayton (RAPCA) are joining efforts to promote a radon education program in Greene and Montgomery counties. This program will provide education, testing kits and educational materials free of charge for those interested. The program is funded by a grant from the Ohio Department of Health.
Both agencies will also collaborate to provide educational opportunities to students as well as local realtors and contractors. Representatives from both agencies hope the collaboration will encourage more residents to test their homes and increase the effectiveness of outreach activities.
Radon, a radioactive gas, is second only to cigarette smoking in causing lung cancer. The U.S. Surgeon General has recommended that all homes be tested for this odorless, tasteless gas. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Greene and Montgomery counties are classified Zone One Counties. Zone One means that buildings within these counties have the highest potential for elevated levels of radon gas. Radon problems in homes, schools and other buildings are easily remedied by contracting with a licensed radon mitigation specialist.
Free Radon Testing Kits for residents of Greene and Montgomery counties can be picked up at the following locations Monday through Friday: Greene County Combined Health District, 360 Wilson Drive, Xenia, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Yellow Springs Village Office utility window, 100 Dayton Street, Yellow Springs, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Jamestown Village Office, Jamestown, 84 Seaman Drive, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; and the Regional Air Pollution Control Agency of Dayton, 117 South Main Street, Dayton, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
